Weblogs of note

There are a number of weblogs that I have been following lately that I don't link to from here. Perhaps I should add them to my list. Here they are in reverse alphabetical order by last name, just to upset the dominant paradigm:

  • Everytime I look at Rob Myers digital images I like them more than the last time. His weblog is more technical, and reveals that there is lots happening behind the making of those images. Not to mention his growing wiki with info and links about free culture, free art, free software, etc. Rob is somewhere in the UK.

  • Today, Tim McFarlane in Philadelphia writes about how fortunate he feels to paint and what it brings to his life.

  • Not that long ago Steven LaRose in Ashland, OR started Fish or Cut Bait and has been on a ferocious and consistent tear since.

  • J.T. Kirkland in D.C. regularly posts images and writing about his own work, writes about other art and reviews shows, and has a neat series going on called Artists Interview Artists, in which any artist can send J.T. five questions for another artist to answer, and he'll give the sender another five questions to answer from another artist. Short and sweet, and ongoing and successful; about twenty five have been done so far.

  • Anna Conti in San Francisco regularly has news, well-written and thoughtful pieces about ideas and issues, pictures, reviews, and excellent interviews with real live walking talking artists. Good stuff.

  • Martin Bromirski, in Richmond, VA is writing about art with real frequency, enthusiasm, and insight, and is also posting his own work.

  • Peter Baldes, also in Richmond, VA can be found in two places. Procurate (which appears to be managed by Pete but shared with others?) has posts about digital art, film and sound clips, assorted images and news. A recent post titled marinheiros II: Oregon Hill Land Wars in which the value of clover over grass is tested in Pete's backyard, and includes an interview with Pete. It's kind of funny and very real, too.
  • In the winter of 2005, artist Jacq Crowley sowed 15lbs of clover seed as ground cover in the backyard of Pete Baldes. This project arose out of an ongoing art project questioning value and how we, as a culture, determine worth. Grass, and its use as lawn, are an assumption of the world in which we live, but what if there were other options? Using plants that are more eco-friendly, low-maintenance, and better soil builders would be wise – but could other species fill the cultural shoes of a traditional grass lawn? The wider question then becomes, what cultural function does a lawn serve? What does a lawn demarcate? If there existed a choice, plants considered ‘weeds’ could easily fill the practical functions of a lawn, and perhaps more.

Another project of Pete's is Netdotart, which contain images, video and more. It is not a weblog, but more of an open project. When you get there don't glance and think you've accidentally landed at Google.
