
Way back earlier in the summer George Lawson asked me to write about his San Cai painting series, which he'll show at Elins-Eaglesmith in San Francisco in September. I agreed enthusiastically, but it was hard to get started. Finally, the week of July 19, when Ann and I were in the lower Sierras at Mono Hot Springs, I sat down one morning at a table outside our cabin and wrote out this brainstorm. This map of ideas really jump started the process, and I got some good ideas down that are central to the essay. The essay is almost done, and will be included in a small booklet with some statements by George, one of the gallery directors, and another essay by painter Joe Hughes that will be included in the gallery announcement sent out before the show and available in the gallery. When the essay is finally buffed and finished I'll post it here.
